Whats in Your Cup of Coffee?

Big ol messy bun with a big ol cup of coffee – how I look 99% of the time

Oh coffee, why do people talk so much smack about you?

There is always controversy about whether coffee is good for you, or bad for your health. Being a nutrition nerd, and a coffee lover, I want to shed some light on this controversial topic, and tell you that coffee actually has health benefits, and is not effecting your health in a negative way.

If you know me, you know I am coffee obsessed, and I am also nutrition/wellness obsessed so if I knew it was not good for you, I definitely would not be promoting it as much as I do on social media and everything else. I do get a lot of questions on it though. “Raquel, why do you drink so much coffee, aren’t you a nutritionist? Don’t you know its bad for you?” Yup I get that frequently. And no I don’t believe coffee itself is bad for you, its what you put in your coffee that has the harmful effects on your health. For me, I keep it simple with just a dash of almond/cashew milk, or use the new silk almond milk specifically for coffee (delicious). Personally, I don’t like adding to much because then you can’t even taste the coffee, so whats the point?

If your curious like I was about what is in your cup of coffee? I will break it down for you.

Coffee is super packed with antioxidants and has been linked to reduce the risk of various diseases such as Type II diabetes, liver diseases, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and depression. Antioxidants are responsible for protecting your bodies cells and repairing them from harmful free radicals. Free radicals are produced from cigarette smoke, alcohol, stress, inflammatory responses, the sun, etc. So your body uses antioxidants to neutralize these negative effects.

Coffee is also FULL of various nutrients from the coffee beans. A typical 8 oz cup (my coffee cups are way bigger then this, oops) consist of:

  • Vit. B2
  • Vit. B5
  • Vit. B1
  • Vit. B3
  • Folate
  • Manganese
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorous

If you drink 2-3 cups a day, (like me) then your getting a decent percentage of your daily intake from these essential nutrients. Not bad right? Oh and by the way, I’m NOT telling you to just drink 10 cups of coffee everyday to get your nutrients, obviously you need to eat fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc. to get the rest of them.

Coffee does contain caffeine which is stimulant that can boost your metabolism and enhance your brain function as well. In the brain, caffeine will block the function of the neurotransmitter called Adenosine (brain hormone). But by blocking this adenosine it actually increases the release of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine making us feel alert. The caffeine in coffee can boost your brain function which improves your mood, reaction time, and overall cognitive function. Caffeine can also boost your metabolism by approximately 3-11%…However, these effects are more short-term then the benefits you get from the nutrients and antioxidants.

BY THE WAY, if your pouring butt loads of sugar, heavy creams into your coffee, and drinking 2,3 or 4 cups, then yes your going to negate a lot of these amazing health benefits from your coffee, and its hardly going to benefit you at all. So my tip for you, is to either drink it black, or skip the heavy fat creams/sugars, go for a non-dairy milk, add a bit of cinnamon or a bit of honey.

Then curl up, sip & enjoy that delicious java friends.

xoxo

Raquel
